The Brand

Alfalfa New York was launched in May 2009 with the Seven Deadly Sins, our first collection of graphic T-shirts. Since then, the brand has been embraced around the world for quality lifestyle products created with great design, fresh graphics, and Latin flavor.

Alfalfa New York now offers more lines of graphic T-shirts and tote bags, including the Latin Divas and limited-edition designs by Tony Di Spigna. We also co-promote other smartly designed products from our friends at Red Asterisk.

The newest addition to our product line is a collection of designer posters. More original designs for T-shirts, tote bags, posters, and other products are on the drawing board at Alfalfa New York and will be available for sale soon!

Rafael Esquer, Gregory Gross, and Minal Nairi are the Partners at Alfalfa New York. They established the brand on Day of the Dead (November 1) in order to emphasize its connection to the rich tradition of Mexican graphic arts. Esquer, a native of the Sonora desert of Mexico, serves as CEO and Creative Director.

Esquer received his BFA in graphic design from Art Center College of Design, and has made New York City his home for more than 15 years. As Creative Director at Radical Media, his group’s work in communication design received the National Design Award in 2004 from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Esquer now owns and operates Alfalfa Studio, his own interdisciplinary design shop in SoHo. Clients have included The Houston Rockets, The Philip Johnson Glass House, The Center for Architecture, The New York Times Magazine, Nike, Bjork, AIGA, Tommy Boy Records, Target, Scholastic, the City of New York, and MTV. Some of his work is contained in the Library of Congress poster collection, the Museum of Fine Art in Montreal, the Poster Museum in Poland, and the Olympic Museum in Switzerland. He frequently serves as judge and speaker at national and international design events.

Part of the proceeds from Alfalfa New York will support scholarships for minority students at Art Center College of Design, Esquer’s alma mater. “This country is wonderful: if you work hard you can reach your dreams. I was able to receive a great education thanks to scholarships, so now I intend to help the next generation of talented Latin students at Art Center secure their education,” explains Esquer. “We need more diversity in the design industry, and I’d like to help foster it.”

Alfalfa New York T-shirts are trademarked and sell for $32.00 exclusively at and selected stores. Made from 100% Peruvian pima cotton, they are available in both men’s and women’s cuts. Tote bags are available in sturdy cotton canvas and denim, and sell for $19.50.
